Alternative Energy Conversion and Storage
To address the environmental impact of emissions associated with combustion processes, alternative methods of energy conversion and storage are necessary. In some cases, combustion could be avoided altogether by employing electrochemical conversion in a fuel cell or renewable power generation via wind or solar. However, these renewable sources require large-scale energy storage system development.

Impact Assessment of Energy Transition: Intercity Travel
A.S. White
—
Under the broad goal of mitigating the anthropogenic climate impacts of the transportation sector, we are investigating how to configure intercity transportation in the United States to maintain/improve connectivity while minimizing environmental impacts through the energy transition. Further, how should the system be changed when we consider equity with regards to air quality, connectivity, and investment? These impacts may be affected by changes in technology, policy, and infrastructure: does the timeline or sequence of changes matter?
Modular Hybrid Propulsion System
A. Kunycky, D. Pham
—
This research seeks to expand on the foundational assessments of modular hybrid aircraft propulsion systems conducted at the GTL. Particular areas of focus include optimized mission modeling, mission-based power system architecture design, robust VTOL UAV maneuverability, and incorporation of additional power technologies such as fuel cells. More broadly, this research also aims to further the investigation of novel aircraft power systems in the context of a changing global energy landscape.
